Helpful Hint:

If you have private insurance check with your health care provider, doctor, or OB-GYN to discuss your medical care during your pregnancy.

Did you know?

Babies of mothers who do not get prenatal care are three times more likely to have a low birth weight and five times more likely to die than those born to mothers who do get care.

Health & Safety: Medical Care

Whether this is your first pregnancy or third, health care is extremely important. You may think that because you or a friend had a healthy baby before without prenatal care that you don’t need to see a doctor right away, but this is taking a huge risk with your baby. Your doctor will check to make sure you and the baby are healthy at each visit. If there are any problems, early action will help you and the baby. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)

While the ideal time to prepare for pregnancy is well before you get pregnant, the reality is that many pregnancies are unplanned. Prenatal care with a qualified health care provider gives you the best chance to receive professional, adequate guidance, and testing based on your medical history and that of your family, as well as your baby father’s medical history.

Good nutrition, adequate folic acid and safe medications are essential to your baby’s health. Visit www.womenshealth.gov to check the prenatal care fact sheet. When your provider does your first prenatal exam many factors are considered. This information is used to prescribe proper vitamins, minerals and treatments that may prevent or lessen the chance of birth defects and difficulties for you and your baby. Prevention is best, early intervention is good. Don’t be too late in taking care of yourself and your baby. Prenatal care is the right thing …..start today.
